The Marina District is a picturesque neighborhood bordered on the south by Lombard Street and the north by the shoreline of San Francisco Bay. Its eastern border is Van Ness and Fort Mason; Lyon Street and the Presidio National Park are to the west. It takes its name from the municipal boat marina.
The neighborhood was the site of the Panama – Pacific International Exposition which ended in 1915. At that time the land was sold to private developers who tore down all of the attractions with the exception of the Palace of Fine Arts. Between 1915 and 1920 the area was developed into a residential neighborhood.
During the 1980’s the Marina District underwent a demographic shift from retirees and middle class families to young urban professionals. A small affluent middle age to elderly population still remains, but the change has made the Marina one of the city’s prime spots for nightlife. On Friday and Saturday nights Union, Fillmore and Chestnut Street establishments are filled with young professionals with a Smartphone in one hand and a drink in the other. The bars run the gamut from dives to sports bars to sophisticated wine or martini bars and lounges.
The marina has much to offer besides a singles scene. Stroll along Union Street and window shop at some of the best boutiques and stores in the city. Chestnut Street is a few blocks away and is filled with high-quality restaurants that cater to every taste. Fort Mason is filled with cultural and environmental non-profit organizations and museums and is host to Greens Restaurant, an iconic gourmet vegetarian restaurant serving San Francisco since 1979. www.greensrestaurant.com
